Overview

Thoracic ESI

A thoracic epidural steroid injection is a minimally invasive procedure designed to alleviate pain and inflammation in the mid-back region. This technique involves the administration of corticosteroids directly into the epidural space of the thoracic spine, providing targeted relief for patients suffering from various spinal conditions.

Treated Area: Back, Spine

During a thoracic ESI, the patient is positioned comfortably, usually lying face down. The area around the injection site is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Under X-ray guidance, a thin needle is carefully inserted into the epidural space of the thoracic spine. Once the needle is correctly positioned, a corticosteroid medication is injected. This medication helps reduce inflammation and provides pain relief by decreasing swelling and irritation around the affected nerves.

Thoracic ESI are used primarily to treat:

  • Thoracic disc herniation: a condition where the disc material in the thoracic spine protrudes and compresses adjacent nerves, causing mid-back pain and potential nerve symptoms.
  • Spinal stenosis: the narrowing of the spinal canal in the thoracic spine, which can put pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness.
  • Degenerative disc disease: the wear and tear of the spinal discs in the thoracic region, resulting in chronic mid-back pain due to the breakdown of disc structure and function.
  • Radiculopathy: pain and neurological symptoms that radiate from the thoracic spine along the path of a compressed or irritated nerve root.
  • Chronic mid-back pain: Persistent pain in the middle of the back that may result from various spinal conditions or muscular issues.
