Overview

Lumbar ESI

Treated Area: Spine. The lumbar spine consists of the lower five vertebrae (L1-L5) in the spinal column.

Lumbar ESI is a common procedure used in interventional pain management to treat pain originating from the lumbar region of the spine. This type of injection is intended to deliver steroids directly into the epidural space in the lower back to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Lumbar ESIs are particularly effective for managing pain that radiates from the lower back down to the legs, commonly known as sciatica. Heres a detailed overview:

Lumbar ESI treatments are used primarily to treat:

  • Thoracic Herniated Disc: Although less common than in the lumbar or cervical spine, herniated discs in the thoracic region can compress spinal nerves and cause pain.
  • Thoracic Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal in the thoracic area can lead to nerve compression, resulting in pain, tingling, or numbness around the torso or in the legs.
  • Thoracic Radiculopathy: This condition involves nerve pain that radiates from the thoracic spine to other parts of the body, typically caused by nerve compression or irritation.
  • Post-herpetic Neuralgia: Following a shingles outbreak, some patients develop lingering pain along the nerve pathways in the thoracic region, which can be severe and debilitating.
