Joint Injections

Treated Area: Spine/Lower Back

Sacroiliac Joint Fusion is a surgical procedure aimed at permanently stabilizing the sacroiliac (SI) joint by fusing the sacrum (the lower part of the spine) to the ilium (the upper part of the pelvic bone). This procedure is typically used to treat chronic pain in the lower back and legs that originates from SI joint dysfunction or degeneration.

SI joint fusion is indicated for:

  • SI Joint Dysfunction: This can be due to abnormal movement (either hypo- or hyper-mobility) of the joint, leading to instability and pain.
  • Degenerative Sacroiliitis: Inflammation of the SI joints due to arthritis or other degenerative changes that result in chronic pain.
  • Conditions That Affect SI Joint Integrity: Including conditions such as Ankylosing Spondylitis or after severe impact or trauma that alters the joint’s normal function.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a type of chronic arthritis that primarily affects the spine and the sacroiliac joints which connect the spine to the pelvis. It is characterized by inflammation that can lead to pain and stiffness in the back, neck, and buttocks.
